#3ThingsThursday: Choosing your ideal neighbourhood
There are so many things to consider when you’re contemplating moving into a neighbourhood. And knowing where to start can be daunting. But there are 3 essentials you need to keep in mind:
1. Lifestyle
Before you even begin house hunting, consider your current lifestyle and needs. What is your current way of life and will the neighborhood support it? You might fall in love with a home, but if the neighborhood doesn’t fit your lifestyle, it could cause unhappiness or discontent in the long term.
It’s helpful to begin your search with at least a general sense of your values, needs and priorities. Are you looking for something urban, suburban or more off the beaten path? Do you value privacy and quiet over being in the center of all the action, or vice versa? Do you have children or are you planning to have them soon?
2. Amenities and conveniences
The proximity of amenities such as shopping, restaurants and parks is attractive to many buyers. Even if you prefer a more remote location, it’s important that you at least consider access to amenities before making a decision. Things like walkability and access to public transportation, or proximity to schools, parks, grocery stores, and shopping centres are all things to keep in mind.
You might be able to find a compromise in a home that’s a short drive away from a city centre, but still remote enough that you don’t find yourself living amidst a bustling urban scene.
3. Commute times
Speaking of transportation: Many people feel their quality of life improves dramatically with a shorter daily commute. When considering a particular neighbourhood, consider doing a test commute before making an offer on a home.
Wake up early and drive to an area you’re thinking of buying in, and then drive to work during rush hour. And if possible, do the reverse commute come quitting time. This test run can give you a more accurate idea of what your daily trips to and from the office will be like.
And there you have it. Finding the ideal neighbourhood can be quite the task, but if you’ve done your homework and have a clear idea of your goals, it will make the entire search process much more manageable.
